Moving on


Puff up your cheeks. Now, keep your hand five inches away from your hand and blow on it. Do you feel something? Can you see what made you feel something on your hand?

Do you use a fan these days? What do you feel when the fan is on?

Have an adult blow air into a balloon. What happens every time the person blows into the balloon? If you don’t tie up the opening of the balloon, what happens?

What you are feeling is called ‘air’. Air is all around us. It is all around us all the time. But we cannot see it. We can only feel air when it moves.

Moving air is called wind. Wind can move things. Wind can change direction. Sometimes, it blows north and sometimes, it blows south.

People use a wind vane to see where wind is coming from and how fast it is blowing. Look at a wind vane and find out how to make your own by clicking on this link:

Breathe in and out deeply. Inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale. Do you feel air going up and down your nose? We breathe air all the time. It keeps us alive. All plants and animals also breathe air.

Air is also needed to burn things. Do the following experiment with an adult:

Cover a burning candle with a glass tumbler. Observe what happens in a minute. It will stop burning after some time. It needs more air to keep on burning.

Grammar and Usage-Revision

  • Revise prepositions of place such as ‘in, on, under, over, behind, etc. Read pages 17 -18 of “English Primer” book.
  • In your four-line writing notebook, practice writing prepositions in simple phrases. Copy the phrases on pages 17-18 of “English Primer” book.
  • Read “Fox on the Box” (Download PDF book).
  • Answer related learning sheet.
  • Arrange the jumbled words into sentences.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

(Learn about ‘adjectives’ or words that describe other words by listening carefully to this story. Use an illustrated children’s storybook or watch the animation video on: )

Most of the storybooks sold in bookstores in the Valley are not specially written for kindergarten level and pre-readers. So, here’s a version of the story using simple words that parents can use to read to their kindergarteners.

Once upon a time, there lived a family of three bears. One big Daddy bear. One medium-sized Mommy bear. And one small Baby bear. One morning, the family of bears sat down for breakfast. Daddy bear had a big bowl. Mommy bear had a medium-sized bowl. Baby bear had a small bowl. Daddy bear said, “This porridge is too hot. Let’s take a walk until it cools down a bit. So, off they went.

Meanwhile, a small girl named Goldilocks was playing in her garden. “Oh, look,” she cried out. She saw a small rabbit hopping by. She ran after the small rabbit which hopped out of her garden gate and into the woods. Soon, she looked around and saw that she was lost! She felt sad and afraid. She saw a smoke floating over the trees. It was not very far. So, she walked towards it….

WORDS TO LEARN: Practice using adjectives orally by thinking of nouns to say after each of the words below:

  • Wet/dry

Grammar and Usage

Learn to sight read as well as use the question words, “what,” “which,” and “who” in interrogative sentences through oral practice.

  • “What” – This question word is used for asking about an object. For example, “What is this?”
  • “Which” – This question word is used for asking a person to choose between or among things. For example, “Which do you prefer?” or “Which star is yellow?”
  • “Who” – This question word is used for asking about persons. For example, “Who is this?” “Who opened the door?”
  • “Where” – This question word is used for asking about places. For example, “Where do you live?” or “Where is the ball?”

Listen and Learn

Story: One summer’s day, there was a crow. He felt very hot and very thirsty. He searched for water everywhere. At last, he saw a pot on the ground. He looked inside the pot. There was very little water in the pot. The crow’s beak could not reach the water. Then, the crow saw some stones nearby. He thought of a plan. He picked up some stones. He dropped the stones one  by one into the pot until the water came up to a level that his beak could reach. The crow drank some water from the pot and flew away happily.

(Note to parents: There are a couple of variants of this story. Some versions say that the the crow found a jug near a well or that the vessel’s neck was too narrow, so on and so forth. But the main plot and lesson of the story remains the same. OPTIONAL: To watch an animation video of this story, you may click on the link provided here. )

SCIENCE-Weather and Seasons (Week 2)

Let’s Learn More About Temperature

At school, we learned about concepts such as “measurement” or how some objects help us find out how long things are (such as a ruler) or how hot or cold things are (thermometer).

Discussion Points:

  • Temperature tells us hot or cold things are. Temperature is also one of the elements of weather.
  • Thermometer- a device/object that tells us the temperature
  • Hot- means high temperature
  • Cold – means low temperature
  • Fever- high body temperature (usually 99 degrees Farenheit)
  • It is usually hot in summer and usually cold in winter


212 degrees Farenheit – boiling point of water

32 degrees Farenheit- freezing point

SCIENCE: Weather and Seasons (Week 1)

Hello, kindergartener! Be the junior scientist that you naturally are. This month there’s plenty of opportunities to hone your skills as a budding scientist.

1. Engage your senses in full to practice one basic skill of a scientist: Observation.  Go outdoors and see, hear, feel, touch, and smell!

2. Describe

  • Sky – What is the color of the sky?
  • Sun–Is the sun ‘visible,’ shining brightly or hidden behind clouds?
  • Clouds – How many clouds can you see? Are the clouds white or gray?
  • Wind – Do you feel the wind blowing gently or is it blowing hard?
  • Temperature – Do you feel hot or cold or just right?
  • Precipitation – Is it raining lightly or heavily? Is it snowing?

3. Record your observations by filling up this chart with appropriate marks or symbols:

4. Don’t be limited by this chart. If you have observed other things worth noting about the weather or even of how animals and insects behave, then, by all means, note down your observations by telling your parent/tutor or by drawing.

5. Self-Discovery

A child-centred learning program ensures that lessons and activities must be relevant or meaningful to a child’s own world which is full of questions, wishes, joys, and imaginations. Here are some theme-related personal questions which any kindergartener will enjoy answering.

  • If you could control the weather, what kind of weather would you want on your birthday?
  • How does a rainy day/windy day/sunny day/snowy day make you feel? Happy/Sad/Sleepy/Hungry, etc.

6. Learn and understand some facts about sunlight. (And then, ask more questions! Be inquisitive, little learner!)

  • Plants need sunlight in order to grow.
  • Sunlight helps our bodies to become stronger and healthier.
  • Sunlight kills harmful germs in the air and our surroundings.
